JK Rowling is criticised for claiming Dumbledore and Grindlewald were gay but only showing them interacting platonically. Neil Gaiman claims Aziraphale and Crowley are “a love story” but only shows them interacting platonically, and is adored for it. I’m sorry, but that is a double standard caused by the popularity of the author.

look bruh, I understand that having Neil Gaiman be active on tumblr ignites a desperate desire for some people on Tumblr to cancel him, regardless of how many things they have to dismiss about him to do it. Unfortunately for you, the fact that you’re mad he didn’t have Aziraphale and Crowley fuck onscreen doesn’t cast a spell to make people forget how much positive queer representation he’s given us, starting from the late 1980′s. 

Back when supporting gays could destroy your career, Neil Gaiman had our backs.

He wrote all the angels in his comics as genderless and nonbinary. Always, right from the beginning. The angels from Sandman in the 1980′s. The angels in ‘Lucifer’. They’ve been openly and unapologetically that way right from the beginning. They don’t have sexual organs- they literally look like Ken/Barbie dolls down there. The only thing he changed for the show is to make these two angels more obviously in love with each other.

His work is and was stuffed with not just LGBT+ characters, but positive, heroic LGBT+ characters. He made LGBT+ characters that were powerful. Desire of the Endless, the literal embodiment of desire in the universe, wasn’t a stacked 1980′s blonde girl, which would have been both so easy and wouldn’t have even been commented on. No, Desire was a nonbinary pansexual. In a time when 95% of people didn’t know what ‘nonbinary’ was as a concept. 

He was even given a GLAAD award in the mid nineties for his positive portrayal of a loving lesbian couple in one of his comics. He freaking wrote a story about Snow White making Snow White a lesbian. Snow White. There were LGBTQ characters in Coraline, a childrens story he wrote, for fuck’s sake.

So I’m sorry you’re butthurt that Neil didn’t write your ship explicit enough. But don’t pretend it’s anything else, given that you’re demanding he change two asexual nonbinary characters into gay men, as if asexual and nonbinary people aren’t part of the community and somehow “aren’t as good” as having two gay men. 

I can hear your “Well he’s just trying to cheat and pretend to support us by making the relationship not explicit” sorry bruh, check your rearview mirror, Neil Gaiman has NEVER been afraid to make his characters openly and unabashedly queer. He has always loudly supported us, wrote gay characters you couldn’t dismiss and were hard to hate and shoved them in the faces of people who had never seen a sympathetic gay character in fiction EVER. You’re just mad he didn’t write the characters you ship as the flavor of m/m relationship you fetishize.
